About the Split Bill Calculator
Group dinners, shared taxis, holiday rentals and utility bills all need to be split. This calculator divides any amount evenly and can add a tip or service percentage first.
Results are rounded to two decimal places. If the amount does not divide exactly, one person may need to cover a small rounding difference.
How to use it
- Enter the total bill.
- Enter the number of people sharing it.
- Optionally add a tip or service percentage.
- Press Calculate to see the amount per person.
Formula
Total with tip = Bill × (1 + Tip % ÷ 100). Per person = Total with tip ÷ People.
Example
A bill of 120 split between 4 people with no tip is 30 each. With a 10% tip the total is 132, so 33 each.
Common mistakes to avoid
The most common problem is splitting the bill equally when people ordered very different amounts. If one person had a 200 drink and others had 100 meals, an equal split can feel unfair. Separate individual items first, then divide only the shared items such as starters or a common dessert.
Taxes and tips cause confusion too. Add them to the bill before dividing. Dividing first and adding tax later can leave small differences that grow across several people.
Group examples and settling up
Suppose four friends share a 2,000 bill with 10% tax and a 5% tip. First add the tax: 2,000 plus 200 gives 2,200. Then add the 5% tip on the pre-tax amount, which is 100, giving 2,300 in total. Each person pays 575. Doing the steps in order makes the result easy to explain to everyone at the table.
Shared trips work the same way. If one person paid for fuel and another paid for tickets, list every payment, find the total, and divide it by the number of people. Then compare each person's payments with their share. The difference is what each person settles with the group. Agree in advance whether amounts will be rounded, which avoids arguments over a few coins.
Splitting fairly
An even split works well when everyone ordered roughly the same. When one person had much more, it is fairer to split the shared items (starters, taxes, delivery) evenly and let each person add their own main items. For trips and flat-sharing, splitting rent by room size and bills evenly is a common approach.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a bill unevenly?
Work out the shared items with this calculator, then add each person's individual items to their share.
Why does the per-person amount not add up exactly?
Rounding to cents can leave a difference of a cent or two. One person can simply round up.
Can I use it for rent or utilities?
Yes. Set the tip to 0 and enter the total amount and number of people.
