About the Nifty & Bank Nifty Profit Calculator

In Nifty and Bank Nifty options and futures you always trade in lots, not single units. If a Nifty option premium moves from ₹100 to ₹110, the ₹10 gain is multiplied by the full quantity of every lot you hold. This calculator does that multiplication for you and shows the real profit or loss in rupees.

Enter the index, the number of lots, your buy price and sell price. The calculator fills in the lot size, works out the total quantity, the gross profit or loss, an estimate of brokerage and statutory charges, the net result and the break-even price. The chart shows how your net profit or loss changes at different exit prices.

How to use it

  1. Choose the index. The lot size is filled in automatically; change it if your broker shows a different number.
  2. Choose options or futures (charges differ between the two).
  3. Enter how many lots you bought or sold.
  4. Enter your buy price and sell price. For a short trade, the sell price is where you entered and the buy price is where you exited.
  5. Enter your broker’s charge per order, or 0 to see the result without charges.
  6. Read the quantity, gross and net profit or loss, and look at the chart.

Formula

Quantity = Lots × Lot size. Gross P&L = (Sell price − Buy price) × Quantity. Net P&L = Gross P&L − Brokerage − STT − Exchange charges − SEBI fee − Stamp duty − GST. Points needed to break even = Total charges ÷ Quantity.

Example

You buy 2 lots of a Nifty call option with a lot size of 65 at ₹100 and sell at ₹110. Quantity = 2 × 65 = 130. Gross profit = (110 − 100) × 130 = ₹1,300. With ₹20 brokerage per order and estimated statutory charges, the net profit is about ₹1,220. The same 10-point move on 2 lots of Bank Nifty (lot size 30) makes a gross profit of only ₹600.

Lot sizes change

NSE and BSE review index lot sizes regularly so that each contract stays within a set value range. That is why the lot size box can be edited. The preset numbers are a starting point only; always confirm the current lot size in your broker’s app or on the exchange website before placing an order.

What the charges include

Besides brokerage, every F&O trade pays Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on the sell side, exchange transaction charges, a small SEBI turnover fee, stamp duty on the buy side and 18% GST on brokerage and exchange charges. The calculator uses approximate current rates to estimate them. Rates change with budgets and exchange circulars, so your contract note is the final word.

On small option trades charges can take a large share of the profit. The break-even line in the result shows how many points the price must move just to cover them.

A word on risk

Studies by SEBI have found that a large majority of individual traders lose money in equity F&O. Options can lose their entire premium, and futures losses can exceed the margin you deposit. Use this calculator to understand the numbers before you trade, not as a signal to trade.

Frequently asked questions

How is option profit calculated?

Multiply the change in premium by the total quantity (lots × lot size). Buying at ₹100 and selling at ₹110 with a quantity of 65 gives a gross profit of ₹650.

Does it work for stock options and futures?

Yes. Choose "Other / stock" and enter the lot size of that stock’s contract.

Does it work for short (sell first) trades?

Yes. Enter your selling price as the sell price and your buying-back price as the buy price. Profit is still sell minus buy.

Are the charges exact?

No. They are estimates based on typical rates. Your broker’s contract note shows the exact amounts.

Is this investment advice?

No. It is a calculation tool only.
