About the Tip Calculator
Working out a tip in your head at the end of a meal is easy to get wrong, especially when the bill is being shared. This tip calculator does it in one step.
Enter the bill, choose a tip percentage and the number of people, and you will see the tip, the total and each person's share.
How to use it
- Enter the bill amount before the tip.
- Enter the tip percentage you want to leave.
- Enter how many people are paying.
- Press Calculate to see the tip, total and amount per person.
Formula
Tip = Bill × Tip % ÷ 100. Total = Bill + Tip. Per person = Total ÷ People.
Example
A bill of 60 with a 15% tip split between 3 people: Tip = 9, Total = 69, and each person pays 23.
Common mistakes to avoid
Tipping customs vary between countries and even between types of service. Before you use a percentage, look at the bill for a service charge, so that you do not pay twice. The calculator simply multiplies the bill amount you enter by the percentage you choose.
When a group splits a tip, add the tip to the bill first and then divide. A 10% tip on 800 is 80, so the total is 880. Shared among three people, each pays about 293.33, which you can round to a convenient amount.
Using the tip calculator in daily life
The right tip depends on the service. Delivery drivers and taxi drivers do not always expect a tip in the same way that restaurant staff do. If you are unsure, a small rounded amount is usually enough. The calculator helps you compare a few percentages quickly before you decide.
When you dine out with a group, ask in advance whether a service charge is already included. Keeping a note of the tip you pay each time helps you stay within a comfortable budget, especially if you eat out often.
Service charge in India
Many restaurants in India add a service charge to the bill. Under consumer guidelines it should be voluntary, and you can ask for it to be removed. If a service charge is already on the bill, you may not want to add a separate tip. If it is not, a tip of around 5–10% is common for good service.
